Documents

To enter Mexico, citizens from the European Community need a six-month valid passport.
During your flight, you will receive a migratory form, which must be filled out (one per person) and handed in to the migratory authority upon arrival in the country.
The migratory authority will retain the entry section of this form. You must retain the exit section of the migratory form and have to hand it back in to that authority upon leaving the country.
MINORS: travelers under 18 who travel alone or not with both of their parents must have a certified letter, signed by their father or mother, that allowed the minor to enter Mexico alone or with only one of his parents. In case of divorced parents, it’s recommended to bring the custody document. If one or both parents are deceased, or if the minor only has one legal parent, an authentic declaration can be requested. It’s highly recommended to scrupulously follow the laws of the European Community about the minor’s expatriation and the validity of the expatriation document. Tour Operators cannot be held responsible for consequences due to documents irregularity for American citizens.

Airport Taxes

Crossing the border by land, you have to pay a fee of around 20 USD to get your tourist visa. Furthermore, there is the airport tax, directly when you check-in, of about 28 USD (depending on the airline). We should point out that these taxes might be inserted, canceled, modified at any moment by the local authority and must be fully paid by the passenger at the time.

The weather in Mexico changes, depending on the geographic location. Rainy season, also known for its high temperatures, is from May to October. The southern costal zones might be warm and damp from July to September. The best time to visit Mexico is from November to May because it’s pretty dry and winter is not too cold.

The official currency is the Mexican peso- 1 euro is about 12,30 pesos and 1 dollar about 10,50 pesos but exchange rates may frequently change. Dollars and traveler-checks are accepted. Common credit cards such as Master or Visa are accepted almost everywhere. To use American Express is more difficult. Please keep in mind that here, the symbol $ is used for pesos; pay attention, don’t get confused. American dollars are signaled by US or USD.

Shopping

A big choice of handy craft, especially jewelry with obsidian, turquoise, malachite, but also beautiful hats, like the famous “Panama”, colorful blankets, wool carpets, ponchos, hammocks, and silver jewelry. Don’t miss the typical markets; fun and colorful, where bargain the prices is usual.
It’s highly recommended to abide by your own country’s laws to import plants, animals, and derivatives. Local salesmen don’t have any knowledge about customs laws.

Telephone

For international phone calls, you have to dial 00 prior to dial the code of the country you want to call and then the phone number. It’s pretty expensive to call from your hotel, we recommend you to buy phone cards, which cost about 10 USD. You might get about 20 minutes if you call to a fixed phone line, anywhere in Europe. Foreign tri-band cell phones work well in the area of Cancun and Playa del Carmen; it may be more difficult to get connected when out of these areas. In respect to others, it’s not recommended to use cell phones when visiting archeological sites, museums, or in the bus, especially on a guiding tour.

Cuisine

The basic ingredients in Mexican cuisine are corn (cooked in many different ways which the most common is the “tortilla”), beans, and spicy sauces with chili. Rice usually replaces bread, served with meat, fish or chicken courses. Fish and seafood are excellent quality, especially next to the sea. Large varieties of flavorful fruits will delight you with natural mixed juices. Local production of beers and liquors, above all the famous tequila…and the less known but highly consume too “mezcal”, easy to recognized by the worm of the agave plant inside the bottle.
